Our work-study and internship programs welcome high school students, college students, and adult learners. These opportunities provide flexibility, allowing participants to engage either in-person at our museum and learning center or remotely via Zoom.

  • We work with high schools in the region of Southwest Virginia to provide internship opportunities for area students at the freshmen through senior level.

    Our internship program centers on public history and museum education, civic engagement, community organizing, leadership development, and cultural preservation advocacy.

    Program Features

    • Hands-on Training: Engage in practical exercises and real-world projects that simulate the responsibilities of a curator and researcher.

    • Workshops and Seminars: Participate in dynamic workshops led by industry experts, covering topics ranging from artifact conservation to public engagement strategies.

  • We offer a comprehensive internship and work-study program that provides valuable opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. *Students may receive course credits or pursue a work-study arrangement.

    The internship is focused on:

    • Scanning and imaging basics and field research from a community-based methodology.

    • Museum curator essentials, collections care management, and exhibit curation.

    • Dynamic and hands-on learning experience learning how to use high quality, industry standard software and equipment.

    Participants engage in practical training that spans various aspects of museum and cultural heritage work, fostering a well-rounded skill set.

    This immersive environment allows students to contribute meaningfully to our mission while gaining invaluable insights and expertise in the fields of scanning and imaging, research, leadership, curatorship, and collections care management.
